My article: Fidget toys that are supposed to help kids focus are doing the opposite
|
Written: by Chicago Tribune

The 5 W’s:
Who: Kate Ellison and all children who play with fidget spinners.
Where: Washington Elementary School and all schools.
When: Anytime.
What: Schools have been banning fidget toys Why: because they are doing the opposite of what the are meant to do.
|
Six sentence summary: If you haven’t heard of fidget spinners they are a piece of plastic with three prongs that stick out. They spin just like the name. They were made to help kids with ADHD or autism focus better in class but they became so popular that everyone wanted one. ADHD is a condition that makes it hard for them to sit still and concentrate. Students with Autism have trouble communicating with others. Teachers have been banning fidget spinners from school because students have been trading or playing with them during class learning time.
|
Questions I’m wondering:
Why did fidget spinners become so popular?
How do they help people concentrate?
|
Connections I’m making:
I had a fidget spinner. I think they are really fun but don’t really help me concentrate.

My article: They make it look easy but it’s not: Ballerinas deal with serious foot pain.

The 5 W’s:
Who: Lauren Lovette and Ballerina’s.
Where: New York City Ballet
When: Posted 06.02.17
What: Ballerina’s deal with serious pain from being in pointe shoes non stop.
Why: Ballerina’s are always in tight fitting stiff pointe shoes unlike any other sport where you just were trainers so their feet get very sore and tired.
|
Six sentence summary:
Ballerina’s are always in a battle with their feet. Being in tight fitting pointe shoe all day makes their feet very tired and sore. Ballerina’s dance through pain and lauren lovette was always in pain until she found out she had and extra bone in her left foot. Shoemakers make their shoes hard and stiff by putting wood and layers of fabric and glue in their pointe shoes. You have to break in your pointe shoes before you use them. The shoe and the dancers foot must work together as one, so each dancer must make sure the shoe fit’s perfectly.
|
Questions I’m wondering:
1: why do pointe shoes cost so much?
2: why does the inside of a pointe shoe have to be so hard.
|
Connections I’m making:
!: i used to do ballet and i watched the big kids dance in pointe shoes.
